Introduction
Casual play is a vital part of any fighting game community. For tournament players, casual play is where new techniques are learned, and game-winning tactics are perfected. But for most fighting game fans, casual play is all about enjoying your games of choice with fellow players.
Fighting games are far more enjoyable when played with other people. Since online play for many fighting games is limited by lag issues, the best place to play fighters is still in person. Traditionally this is best done in arcades, but unfortunately it has become increasingly difficult to meet other players this way.
OHN provides fighting game fans with a chance to meet up with fellow players from around the country in an organised environment. Here you will find a wide variety of players with varying skill levels, as well as interests in a large range of fighting games, above and beyond those featured in the OHN
» tournament roster.
Arcade Cabinets
GGs Cabinets. A number of Japanese-style "head-to-head" cabinets will be available for casual play during the weekend. These cabinets are owned and provided by
» sneek, along with a range of fighting game boards. These cabinets will be free to play for anyone inside the OHN venue.
Glasshouse Cabinets. There are also a few arcade cabinets in the Glasshouse at UTS, where OHN is being held. A number of these cabinets feature classic fighting games, and will be available for use on a pay-per-credit basis.
BYO Consoles
There will be a large amount of space set aside for casual play on consoles. The best way to take advantage of these facilities is to bring your own console to OHN.
OHN TVs. OzHadou and EGG will provide several TVs, most of which will be needed for running the tournaments. Spare TVs are available for casual play on a "first come, first serve" basis. Simply plug your console into a free TV and start playing.
BYO TVs. Given the number of provided TVs will be limited, the safest way to guarantee you get to play the games you want to play is by bringing your own TV. There will be plenty of space available for people to set up their own TV, with the added advantage that you have complete control over what gets played on your TV.
It only takes a few people to BYO TVs and consoles to create a large casual play area at OHN. We recommend that people use the
» forums to coordinate their BYO plans with other players.
DIY Events
What can you do if your favourite game isn't in the
» official tournaments roster? Organise your own!
Anyone can organise their own tournament for any fighting game they like using the casual play facilities at OHN. Use the
» forums to plan and advertise your tournament, running on your own console, or even using
» sneek's head-to-head cabinets. (Please be sure to arrange use of the cabinets and boards with sneek first!)
Exhibitions can also be organised in this way, and if there's enough interest from players (and available time) we'll try to get them up on the stage area for everyone to see.
Remember that do-it-yourself tournaments have the added advantage that you can use your favourite rules and games, and run them whenever suits you best. Plus if a DIY tournament is popular enough to draw the attention of the OHN staff, that game will have a much greater chance of making the official roster in the future.
So if you really want to see more tourneys at OHN, get on the
» forums and DIY!
